Moving homes is never an easy thing, even if you are transferring to someplace better and for a better life. There are so many things to think about both in your old home and your new one and so many things can go wrong. Something could be lost or left behind. Things may get damaged. The new place may not be properly prepared for your arrival.

To help make a move go smoother, here are some tips to make your transfer as hassle-free as possible.

Declutter Your Belongings

Before the move itself, it’s the best time to declutter and to dispose or give away possessions around your house that you no longer want or need. The fewer items you have to move, the easier (and less costly) your move will be. Consider giving some possessions away to various charities, or use online selling platforms to earn money that can even help subsidize your move.

Contact Utility Companies in Advance

Before your actual move, contact the various utility companies such as your electricity, water, kitchen gas, and even taxes and dues. Be sure to schedule to disconnect your utilities and settle your bills at your former home and set-up these utilities in advance at your new home so that once you arrive, you will have an operational and livable home right away and make settling into your new home a more relaxed experience.

Make an Inventory/Checklist

It’s a good idea to make an inventory of all your belongings and furniture to make sure nothings gets lost in the move. To make things easier to categorize and check, divide your inventory by the rooms you have in the house. This will help you later on figure out which items go where in your new home.

Make checklists as well of tasks you need to do before the move such as informing organizations like banks and offices of your new address, what items to pack for the first few days of the move when the house isn’t fully set up yet, and settling any concerns with homeowners or building associations.

You may also want to take photographs of your rooms or even cable/device set-ups (such as your TV, Internet, speakers, etc.) to give you a guide for how to set-up these devices again in your new home.

Purchase Packing and Moving Supplies

Once you have your inventory, this can give you an idea of how much packing supplies you will need such as bubble wrap, duct tape, boxes, rope, and other materials. You may even need tools to dismantle some types of furniture such as beds or tables. Be sure to purchase quality materials from reputable retailers.

Hire Professional Movers/Removal Company

While you can try to handle a move by yourself or just with the help of family and friends, it may be a good idea to hire professional movers or a removal company. Companies such as these make your life a lot easier by doing things like inventory, packing, and the transportation of your belongings. They also have experience dealing with certain specialty items that you may not know how to handle properly, such as antiques, pianos, large appliances, or valuable artworks. See what items you have that may need special care and find movers who have the matching expertise for these items.

Book Shipping Services for Non-Essential Items

You may not have to move all your belongings all in one go, especially if you are moving to location far away from your current home or even another country. Shipping services can let you send off items either in advance of your actual move or even after you have moved your family and your essential belongings (assuming you will still have access to your former home). Using a shipping service in combination with a moving company can help you spread out your move over several days or weeks so that the entire process become more manageable.

Have Your Vehicle Checked

While you will have movers with their trucks and vans bringing most of your belongings, furniture, and possessions, you may be taking your own vehicle to drive yourself and your family and any pets to your new home. It may also be a good idea to have valuable documents such as deeds, passports, bank documents, birth certificates, jewelry, and other valuables with you rather than in a mover’s vehicle. If you are, make sure to have your vehicle checked at a reputable vehicle service shop. Things like tire pressure, oil, brakes, battery, and engine should all be running smoothly, especially if you are going to be moving somewhere that is a long distance from your former residence. The last thing you want to happen is have your vehicle break down on the way while it is filled with your family and those choice valuable belongings.

Moving to new home marks the start of a new life and because that is already exciting in itself, it’s best to make sure the move itself is as painless and uneventful as possible so you can enjoy this new chapter fully and stress-free.
