While blogging isn’t as big as it was in the early 2000s, especially with the advent of social media, blogs are still a secret weapon that many business websites can use to heighten their visibility not only in social media but also on search engines. Many website creation platforms and services offer blogging features, but many businesses often don’t utilize them, which a huge is lost opportunity. When used properly, a blog section of a business website can be a powerful tool to make a site stand out from the competition.

Blogs Focus on What Customers Care About

Some people may ask why a blog is necessary when most business website have a news or updates section in their website. Don’t these two sections just serve the same function? Technically, a news or update section talks about the latest products, services, improvements, changes, or activities of the business. The topics are usually inward-facing. They’re about the business. Thus, this section only updates and only appeals to visitors who already care about the business or its products and services, like existing customers.

Blogs are focused on creating content featuring topics that the business’ target market cares about. The blog posts or articles may not feature the business or its offerings directly, but instead talk about topics potential customers may find interesting. This is why it’s important to have both sections present in a business website as they fulfill different needs. For example, the news section of an automotive repair business website may talk about the latest promo on tire alignment by the business or a new branch opening, while a blog entry would talk about why it’s necessary to have one’s tires aligned at least every 6 months or why not all types of tire alignment technology is the same.

Blogs Keeps a Site Active and Optimized for SEO

Another difference between a news/updates section and a blog section is that it’s easier to keep a blog updated and active. Since blogs can talk about any number of topics that are related (whether directly or tangentially) to a business, there is a much wider range of topics that can be covered. A news or updates section is limited by how often a business actually has some new offering or major change or event, which doesn’t happen on a regular basis for most businesses.

That’s why a blog can be updated daily or even more frequently if one puts enough effort into finding new topics and creating content, without having to wait for the business to do something newsworthy. Having a section of the website that is constantly updated will help make a site rank higher in search engines since they tend to prioritize websites that are regularly updated and with newer content.

Blogs Bring Both Awareness and Conversion

While social media posts and content are better at catching attention and creating awareness among the users of the various platforms, they aren’t that good at converting views or engagement into leads or sales. This is because the content doesn’t ask the viewer to go beyond the platform and the habit of most people when seeing a social media post is to simply scroll past once they have seen it.

Websites are often better at conversion as they can lead a viewer through various sections, each engaging the viewer on different stages of their decision-making process. The problem is that unless a website is promoted or given awareness, there are no viewers to convert.

This is why a blog article in a website provides the best of both worlds. Blog posts, with their customer-oriented topics, generate previews and headlines that can catch attention more easily in search engines and can also be posted on social media platforms. Their headlines and images serve the same purpose as a normal post in speaking to a viewer’s interest rather having a business talk about itself like an ad. It’s more of a soft sell. However, because well-written blog posts entice a reader to want to read more, it will lead a reader to the website where it is hosted, and then it can more easily link out to other sections of the website to help convert a reader into a buyer. It’s truly the perfect bridge between creating awareness and conversion into a sale.

That is why if you have a website for your business, taking the time and effort to have a well-written and constantly updated blog section will be more than worth your while.
